1 review for Pioneer VSX-LX305 9.2 Channel Network AV Receiver

  1. Deanna Gardam (verified owner) Verified Buyer

I decided to buy this Pioneer LX305 receiver to replace my aging Denon X1000 after seeing the many rave reviews on YouTube and Google. As I live in Tasmania, I have no way of auditioning this or other suitable receivers in person, we don’t have decent hifi stores locally, so I had to trust the reviews, but felt confident doing so in this case.
And I was especially glad to see the discount price offered by Klapp, that certainly made the decision easier!
I am quite pleased with the sound quality, it definitely exceeds the lower-end Denon I had previously.
However, it has quirks that buyers should be aware of…
Dirac is brilliant when it’s set right, but I found this quite tricky to get the sound close to the way I wanted. I found with my B&W speakers on the initial calibration the sound stage was excellent but it created a sharpness in the higher frequencies that was uncomfortable to my ears, and was noticeably lacking in bass. I had to end up doing the Dirac setup using the Dirac Live app on my laptop, rather than the recommended Pioneer app on my phone. Using the laptop I was able to download curves to increase the bass as well as make my own adjustments to the 2.5khz frequency to reduce the sharpness at the top end. The Dirac Live app makes it easier to do more accurate adjustments, as well as saving various curves. This took a few attempts though before getting a satisfactory sound, and the overall process of having to boot the laptop, load the app, make adjustments, export curves etc could be quite cumbersome for the average user who just wants to make a few tweaks to customise the sound to their liking. You can’t just adjust the sound on the fly like a traditional equaliser. You have to do your settings, export them (don’t forget to set your speakers to ‘small’ on the avr after every export too!) then resume your audio to see if it’s to your liking. Rinse, repeat if not. This is more for the enthusiast who likes delving into the more technical aspects of sound adjustment, especially if you want to take the time to get the best sound out of your purchase.
Or maybe you’ll be fortunate enough to get the right sound with the first setup!
Other issues I found were with HDMI and WiFi…
The HDMI can be slow to connect often cutting the first few seconds of audio, especially with Bluray discs.
The WiFi is dismally unreliable. Honestly, I’ve never experienced a device so bad. The avr sits about a metre away from my router, yet it regularly drops the connection. Often a hard reset is required to reconnect. I was having to unplug the power cord to do this until I discovered you can hold the power button for 5 seconds to cycle it. However it is still an inconvenience and hard to believe that such a modern device in this price range could be this unreliable. One of the reasons I wanted to upgrade to this avr was the ability to stream music from YouTube, Bandcamp etc. Very disappointing.
There’s also a relay ‘clunk’ a few minutes after being turned on and other random times.
It’s also worth noting that the florescent display on this model is blue, not amber as shown in the pictures.
I wish I could’ve given this 5 stars, there is a lot to like about it, but also unnecessary annoyances too. I’m just grateful I didn’t pay full price.
